Longieaf pine genetics

چکیده
Using natural regen, eration can be risky, however. A good example is from the Southwide Southern Pine Seed Source Study (SSPSSS), iongleaf phase, established in the early 1950’s (Wells and Wakeley 1970). The stands and trees from which seed was collected were carefully chosen to be representative of the genetic resource of the area. One of the seed sources, from southeastern Louisiana performed much below expectations in growth and survival after 10 years. Upon investigation, Wakeiey found that the area had been clear-cut in 1905, and that the stand seeded in from three, possibly four residual trees. Aliozyme analysis later showed that the source was indeed genetically challenged (Schmidtiing and Hipkins 1998).

XIII Genetic Transformation of Pinus palustris
Longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.) is an important softwood species in the southeast United States. In presettlement times, this species occupied extensive, pure stands throughout the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plains from southeastern Virginia to eastern Texas, as well as south throughout the northern two-thirds of Florida. Its range also includes the Piedmont Ridge and Valley, and Mountain ...
متن کاملRoot diseases and exotic ecosystems : implications for long- term site productivity
s SUMMARY Root disease fungi, particularly root rotting Basidiomycetes, are key drivers of forest ecosystems. These fungi have co-evolved with their hosts in various forest ecosystems and are in various states of equilibrium with them. Management activities and various land uses have taken place in recent times that have dramatically altered edaphic and environmental conditions under which fore...
متن کاملDevelopment and characterization of SSR markers from Pinus massoniana and their transferability to P. elliottii, P. caribaea and P. yunnanensis.
Pinus massoniana (Masson's pine) is a widespread tree species in central and southern China and northern Vietnam; it is valued for rosin and paper production. Despite the significant economic value of Masson's pine, little work has been done on its molecular genetics. We developed 318 SSR primers from genome sequences of P. massoniana, and we identified 10 polymorphic markers. The number of all...
متن کاملUsing Landscape Genetics Simulations for Planting Blister Rust Resistant Whitebark Pine in the US Northern Rocky Mountains
Recent population declines to the high elevation western North America foundation species whitebark pine, have been driven by the synergistic effects of the invasive blister rust pathogen, mountain pine beetle (MPB), fire exclusion, and climate change. This has led to consideration for listing whitebark pine (WBP) as a threatened or endangered species under the Endangered Species Act, which has...
متن کاملMapping quantitative trait loci controlling early growth in a (longleaf pine x slash pine) x slash pine BC(1) family.
Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were employed to map the genome and quantitative trait loci controlling the early growth of a pine hybrid F(1) tree ( Pinus palustris Mill. x P. elliottii Engl.) and a recurrent slash pine tree ( P. elliottii Engl.) in a (longleaf pine x slash pine) x slash pine BC(1) family consisting of 258 progeny. Of the 150 hybrid F(1) parent-specific RAPD ma...
